Mindreading the self
نویسنده
چکیده
This chapter contrasts two different kinds of account of our knowledge of our own thoughts. According to standard theories, self-knowledge of at least a subset of thoughts is direct and noninterpretive. According to the alternative, which will be elaborated and defended here, self-knowledge results from turning our mindreading capacities on ourselves, relying on the same sensory channels that we employ for other-knowledge and utilizing many of the same sensory cues.

Know yourself and you shall know the other... to a certain extent: multiple paths of influence of self-reflection on mindreading.
Social and neurocognitive research suggests that thinking about one's own thinking and thinking about the thinking of others-termed 'mindreading', 'metacognition', 'social cognition' or 'mentalizing' are not identical activities. The ability though to think about thinking in the first person is nevertheless related to the ability to think about other's thoughts in the third person. Unclear is h...
متن کاملMirroring, Mindreading, and Simulation
What is the connection between mirror processes and mindreading? The paper begins with definitions of mindreading and of mirroring processes. It then advances four theses: (T1) mirroring processes in themselves do not constitute mindreading; (T2) some types of mindreading (“low-level” mindreading) are based on mirroring processes; (T3) not all types of mindreading are based on mirroring (“high-...

What underlies our ability to attribute mental states to ourselves? In this paper I will focus on theoretical approaches to self-mindreading that posit a monitoring mechanism which detects the presence of certain kinds of mental states. I will discuss perhaps the most influential version of such a theory, proposed by Shaun Nichols and Stephen Stitch. I will discuss an influential objection to t...
متن کاملMetacognition and mindreading: judgments of learning for Self and Other during self-paced study.
The relationship between metacognition and mindreading was investigated by comparing the monitoring of one's own learning (Self) and another person's learning (Other). Previous studies indicated that in self-paced study judgments of learning (JOLs) for oneself are inversely related to the amount of study time (ST) invested in each item. This suggested reliance on the memorizing-effort heuristic...
متن کاملHow we know our own minds: the relationship between mindreading and metacognition.
Four different accounts of the relationship between third-person mindreading and first-person metacognition are compared and evaluated. While three of them endorse the existence of introspection for propositional attitudes, the fourth (defended here) claims that our knowledge of our own attitudes results from turning our mindreading capacities upon ourselves. Section 1 of this target article in...
